Cardan shaft also refer to as drive shafts is the shaft with integrated joints. It acts as an intermediate between the driving and the driven shaft that are not aligned on the same axis transferring the running torque smoothly. Cardan shafts transmit rotary motion and torques via an articulated shaft Assembly. In order to allow variations in the alignment and distance between the driving and driven components, cardan shafts frequently incorporate one or more  universal joints shaft , jaw couplings, or rag joints and sometimes a splined joint or prismatic joint. In automobile to deliver power from an engine to the other end of the vehicle the shaft that may be used is longitudinal shaft. To send power from a central differential, trans-axle or transmission to the wheels a pair of short cardan shafts is commonly used.
