CV shafts

Constant Velocity drive shafts or CV Shafts are used to carry the power from the engine. CV drive shafts allow continual rotational velocity through a variable angle without a significant increase in friction or play and hence are unique type of drive shaft. Applications for which CV drive shaft are most commonly used are listed as below:

  •          Front-wheel drive vehicles
  •         All-wheel drive vehicles

Rear-wheel drive vehicles with independent rear suspensions are usually found using CV joints at the ends of the rear axle shafts.

Basically there are two main applications of CV joint, one out of them is near the wheel called the outboard joint and second is close to the transaxle known as the inboard joint. Further they are categorized as fixed and plunging CV joint according to their operating requirements. CV joint is called as fixed CV joint if it is fixed and does not move in. If the joint does move in and out, usually up to 40mm, it is known as a plunging CV joint.
Generally speaking, outboard CV joints are fixed and inboard CV joints are plunging. There are exceptions to this however there must be at least one plunging CV joint in every drive shaft.
Considering their design and the constant loads they bear, its not surprising that CV joints have a limited life and are particularly prone to accelerated wear due to contamination.
